Alma 17-21

18:2 … Surely, this is more than a man. Behold, is not this the Great Spirit who doth send such great punishments upon this people, because of their murders?

At first I think, how is it possible that someone would think that you were Jesus Christ, but then I realize how awesome that would be. Garner quotes H. David Burton who quotes an unknown author who said, “Live in such a way that people who know you but don’t know Christ will want to know Christ because they know you.” I pray every morning that I can live my life to become more like Jesus, but yet I don’t see anyone every mistaking me for Him, but I’m sure there are people that could. I think we should all strive for someone to make that wonderful mistake. We should at least live our lives each day with the hope of becoming more like Jesus, and maybe someday someone will wonder about us as King Lamoni did Ammon.

How do they?

How is it that people manage to get themselves out of bed so early every morning? I was going to get up early and make it to the library to get some stuff done this morning, but that didn’t happen. Fortunately, I woke up at 7:20 (almost an hour later than desired) and now I’ve got a couple minutes before I have to leave for my 9 o’clock class, but I was just thinking last night and this morning at how much respect I have for those people, like Elizabeth, that go to work at 4 in the morning to clean the school. I have a hard enough time getting myself out of bed at 6:30 or 7 to go to school, let alone hours before hand to go and clean it…

Anyways, to all of those that are cleaning the school at 4 in the morning… I appreciate you and respect that you are willing to get up that early for whatever minimal amount of money they pay you… I don’t think I could personally do it, so congratulations to you! Thanks! :)

:) Long Last Sunday :(

Wow, so much to say, but I so need to get to bed too! Today was kind of depressing at first, but then it sure picked up! The day started off with many talking about this being the last Sunday that we’d be together and stuff like that and I actually almost started to cry in sacrament meeting this morning when the bishop was talking. We had a good lesson on forgiveness during Priesthood, along with good messages throughout the rest of the morning. I came home for lunch and then got asked to go look at a computer over at Birch 319. They are friends of the guys across the hall. The computer problem seemed to be related to a battery or something, I don’t know, but I got that working and then installed Mozilla on her compaq laptop so that hopefully she’ll get less popups from IE. As I was leaving, the other two girls – Ashley and Haley were starting to watch Austin Powers and I got sucked into watching for a while. We got to talking and Ashley is from somewhere around Malibu, Thousand Oaks, Santa Clarita or somewhere along those lines. She is also just here for the summer… I can’t believe the number of people that I keep finding that are only here for the summer – I would have thought that I would have been the only one. I can think of 4 right off the top of my head (Stevie, Allison, Ashley and myself) and I think there are others too.

I finally came home around 3 and as I was getting ready to start working Sam came by. We talked for a while and then I had to return a call from Ryan as he was at my house trying to find the DVD that Travis needs for Thursday evening, Frosh orientation. I finally got to doing homework at 4:15, but didn’t last too long. I did some work on the Crossroads site and then it was off for Birch. I was planning on going back to 319 to watch “A Night at the Roxbury,” but I stopped at 308 to see what was going on and find out when Allison was going to get back. Well, she was already back, it turns out she came back last night and I just missed her at church this morning. She had a safe trip, but she did try to get into a head on accident in Provo. She was in the center turn lane and another car came straight at her, finally stopping just before hitting her car. Allison and I sat and talked for a while and then I was off to 319 to see how the movie was coming. (They complained about not getting visitors down there, so I figured I’d try to help them out today at least.) That didn’t last long, as they weren’t there watching the movie, so I headed back to Pineview, planning on getting some work done before Ward Prayer.

Well, I stopped by 57 to talk to Sam about doing home teaching with Allison on Tuesday evening and I ended up hanging out there for a couple minutes as Elizabeth and Jenn came in to chat for a bit. Then we left Nate and Sam, and the girls and I ended up at Steve’s (55) for the next hour or so just telling stories. That continued all the way to ward prayer. I did sweet swap with 307, which was just like 308 as all those girls were at 307 so that was fun and then it was off to finish up the stories with Elizabeth, Jenn and Steve in 305. We finally left about 11 and then it was back to working on the crossroads site.

Now, I’m sure I could go into more detail (not that I haven’t already), but I really need to get to bed so that I can hit the library tomorrow morning and finish up my econ numbers before class. Then I’ll be in the library doing my econ paper all afternoon. Wish me luck on my Phil exam tomorrow too! I really had a lot of fun with Elizabeth, Jenn and Steve for the 2nd Sunday in a row now.. It’s too bad that this is my last Sunday. :( I’m really going to miss all these people… What am I going to do with myself? I’m going to have to go back to hanging out with Promack and Floate… God have mercy!

Alma 13 – 16

13:28 But that ye would humble yourselves before the Lord, and call on his holy name, and watch and pray continually, that ye may not be tempted above that which ye can bear, and thus be led by the Holy Spirit, becoming humble, meek, submissive, patient, full of love and all long-suffering.

I think it is important that we remember that we will not be tempted above what we can bear, and i think that this threshold increases with each unsuccessful temptation. Therefore, we cannot use the excuse that the temptation was too great for us, for it wasn’t. It was just a test, that we could have passed and yet failed for whatever reason. We need to humble ourselves and not give in to temptations. Once we have not given in, it will be easier to not give in in the future. Each success or failure builds and has a lasting effect on our lives.

Another 3 down

It was a long day in the library today, but I got the other three phil lessons done today. I went straight to the library after our elders quorum breakfast this morning and was there all day minus an hour for lunch and an hour for dinner. I also got my three chapters read for econ and started working on collecting the numbers for econ too. I’m going to be busy tomorrow after church though cause I’ve got a lot of stuff left to do.

I drove through Birch today as I was going to check on the girls in 308, but it was dark and they had their door closed so I figured they were out. I haven’t been over to Birch now for a couple nights cause I’ve been so busy. It’s actually been so weird to not see any of the girls really at all. I did pass Jamie on the way home from the library this afternoon, but we didn’t talk at all. I have no clue when Allison is coming back from SLC and I don’t know what anyone else is up to as I haven’t talked to pretty much anyone all week other than Allison.

I went to Wal*mart tonight to get some storage tubs. Grace ended up calling to check on the plans for next week. She wants to leave as early as possible on Friday, so I’m going to try and find out what my options are for checking out of Pineview earlier than 9 as that was the earliest time on the checkout sheet. I’m hoping that they’ll let me check out the day before or earlier that morning so we can get going by 8 or maybe even earlier.

I think that’s about it for tonight…. It’s probably time for bed now anyways.

3 Down, 3 to Go

I got through a good portion of the emails from the school, so I am making progress. I also got the pages that Travis’ needs done for the calendar. He’s doing the calendar this year, but I’m sending him the cover, back and the inside page with the names so that he doesn’t have to deal with formatting. I’ll have to see how it turns out.

I got three of my phil lessons done today which is pretty darn good cause they weren’t short like they were last week. I still have three more to do, which I know I can’t get done tomorrow morning, so it looks like I’ll be taking the test on Monday now which will let me finish reading them tomorrow and Sunday. I also have three chapters of econ to read and take a quiz on, along with writing my paper for econ and gathering all the numbers so I’m going to be a busy bee this weekend.

I got kicked out of the library at 9 tonight and came home to work on the marquee and calendar for a while. I was going to start a movie at 10, but I was still working until about 10:30 at which point Amanda, Becky and Janae came over and had me take some pictures of them. They took some random things from their FHE brothers and are holding them ransom for a Sunday dinner. I guess I should just be happy they came over so I had some excitement tonight.

I think that Allison is in SLC, and was going to call her earlier, but lost track of time once the girls came over. We have an elders’ quorum breakfast tomorrow morning at 9 and then I’ll be in the library most of the day until they kick me out at 9 again. I know I’ll still be working on stuff on Sunday, but I’ll be doing that from home as the library won’t be open. Not much else to report other than I missed a call from Aimee last night. I called her back on my way home from class this morning, but we didn’t talk long before my battery died. Today was also Tina Sargent’s birthday, and thanks to a reminder from Bouse, I called her and talked to her for a couple minutes. I knew it was her birthday, but I probably would have forgotten to call if Bouse hadn’t reminded me. I can’t think of anything else so I’m going to go to bed before midnight, well, it will be after midnight by the time I say my prayers and pack this computer up… :)

Shoebox Accounting

Budgeting and financial management need not be overly complicated or time-consuming. The story is told of an immigrant father who kept his accounts payable in a shoe box, his accounts receivable on a spindle, and his cash in the cash register.

“I don’t see how you can run your business this way,” said his son. “How do you know what your profit is?”

“Son,” replied the businessman, “when I got off the boat, I had only the pants I was wearing. Today your sister is an art teacher, your brother is a doctor, and you’re an accountant. I have a car, a home, and a good business. Everything is paid for. So you add it all up, subtract the pants, and there’s my profit.”

White Glove

White glove went well yesterday although we have some things that need to be taken care of, but we’re going to make Val do them as Stephen and I have done most of the rest of the work. As I predicted, I wasn’t going to get much done yesterday school wise an the only thing that I got done was my reading for psych today.

I went to the choral concert last night to see Allison and I also saw Janae there. The show was really good and there were some numbers that I really enjoyed. After the show I went home, watched Without a Trace and had some ice cream (I have to eat it all within the next week before I leave!). Then Allison called to see what had happened to me and I convinced her to come over for some ice cream. She came over and hung out until about 11:30 at which point she decided that she wanted to go to Ramirez, so we headed over there. (She hadn’t had dinner yet.) It was about 12:30 when I got home from there and it was straight to bed from there.

I slept in again this morning and just had enough time to get a little bit of stuff done before psych class this morning. Now I’m going to try and get some phil done as I have 5 lessons to do, hopefully by tomorrow so I can go take the test, but we’ll have to see. I’m probably going to have to put it off until Monday at the rate things have been going. I also have a lot of email still to go through from the high school and things to deal with, so I think this is going to be one busy weekend.

I found my email!

Well, since I didn’t write last night and I don’t have any internet right now, I figure that maybe writing will keep me from eating as many M&Ms as if I don’t write, but we’ll just have to see!

I slept in yesterday morning, I just couldn’t get myself out of bed even though I really wanted to. Sam and I did our home teaching with the girls (minus Allison) and the guys in the afternoon so that was good. I don’t think I did as good of a job as I should have done, but not bad for my first time. Hopefully they got the idea and will remember to apply it to their lives. As usual, I spent some time in the library and got the stuff done that I needed to have done, but not much more. I did get a first draft of my letter of appeal done though, so that was definitely a step in the right direction. As I was getting ready to leave the library for the evening, to give up on my homework, I found Allison and ended up staying about another hour and a half in the library just finding random things to look at online while she did her homework. So much for being in bed by 10:30!

When I got home around 11 I found another couple voice mails from Travis, so I figured I needed to get in touch with him. Well, we finally put an end to the phone tag and we talked for about an hour. Now, by the time that I was looking at getting into bed it was about 12:30, so I decided to pass on writing for one night.

I couldn’t get myself out of bed again this morning. I snoozed for about an hour before finally convincing myself that I needed to get out of bed so that the other guys could shower this morning too. I went and took my religion final, but I don’t know how I did on it yet. I guess I’ll find out tomorrow once everyone has taken the test. After coming home to get my backpack, I went back to the library and started going through all the new emails on my fuhsd account. It appears that they finally stopped the forwarding for me when they upgraded the server and so I haven’t been getting any of the emails they’ve been sending me for over a month now! I’ve got some work to catch up on here in the next couple days. This is going to be a really busy last week of school!

We also have white glove/clean check today, which I need to start working on shortly. Some of the stuff that they want us to do is absurd, so we’ll just have to see how things go. I haven’t started on my phil yet for this week and have psych to do for tomorrow too. I’d also like to go see Allison tonight at the choir performance, so we’ll just have to see how things come together. Of course, if I had internet, things would be that much better….

First Draft of my Letter of Appeal

Scott Chester
140 W 2nd S Apt 53
Rexburg, ID 83440

13 August 2004

BYU-Idaho Admissions
Kimball 120
Rexburg, ID 83460

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing this letter to appeal my admission to Brigham Young University – Idaho (BYU-I) due to the number of credits that I would have at graduation. After spending the second summer block at this campus, I cannot picture myself at any other university.

As you know, I would be a transfer student from California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). While CSUF is a good school, it is not of the caliber, nor can it offer the experience to me that BYU-I can. If not accepted to BYU-I, I will continue my education at CSUF and graduate two semesters after I could have graduated from BYU-I. I would be graduating from CSUF with approximately the same number of credits that I would graduate from BYU-I with. The reason that I will go over the credit limitation is that I have taken classes for certificates at Palomar College which I have known would not transfer to other colleges, but I believe that the experiences gained in these classes will help me prepare for a job in the information systems field. One of the certificates I earned was the Cisco Certified Network Associate, and I have also taken many of the classes required for the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer certificate.

I joined the Church just three days before moving here for the second summer block (yes, I was interested in the school before becoming a member), and those two actions combined have been the best things I have done in my life. I have thoroughly enjoyed everything that I have learned so far, both academically and spiritually on this campus. I have taken advantage of all the extras (i.e. devotionals and other activities) that I could manage since I have been here. I love this campus and what it has to offer. I thoroughly respect the dress and grooming standards, along with the rest of the honor code, and find that one of the assets of this university that cannot be found in most other settings around this country. I agree with President Bednar that this campus could be called a Disciple Training Camp.

Should I be accepted to continue at BYU-I, I would be willing to do whatever it is necessary to graduate as quickly as possible, so that other students will also have the opportunity to attend this wonderful university. If allowed on the fast-grad program, I would graduate in ______ of ____ with ___ credits. I have enclosed a copy of my graduation plan, approved by the College of Business _____ Academic Advising Center this past month.

I also believe that I can bring a valuable asset to the school with my previous experiences. I have been working for the high school that I graduated from for six years now, serving as technical director for the theatre for part of the time and working closely with the director of activities for numerous years. In addition to my experience at the high school, I have worked with other companies managing outdoor concerts, installing sound & video systems and managing about 150 weddings each year along with other tasks. I have knowledge with sound, video, lighting and other concert/theatrical systems along with the years of experience I have with networking and computers in general (Macintosh, and Unix along with Windows).

I sincerely hope that you will grant me the privilege of continuing my education at Brigham Young University – Idaho beginning Winter 2005. If given the opportunity, I would do everything in my power to uphold the standards of this University at all times and in all ways through the power of Jesus Christ.

Thank you for your consideration,

Scott Chester

Enclosure: grad plan

Alma 8 – 12

In chapter 11 we learn that the love of money causes people to sin against Alma and Amulek. I hate to admit it, but money seems to rule our world, much more than it should. Garner quotes James E. Faust, “The Wall Street Journal acknowledge, ‘Money is an article which may be used as a universal passport to everywhere except heaven, and as a universal provider of everything except happiness.’ Henrik Ibsen wrote, ‘Money may buy the husk of many things, but not the kernel. It brings you food, but not the appetite, medicine, but not health; acquaintances, but not friends; servants, but not faithfulness; days of joy, but not peace or happiness.’” I know I’ve heard many things along those lines before, especially the WSJ quote. We Americans get so wrapped up in having more stuff than the Jones’s and in the process love money, not our Heavenly Father, and also almost always commit the universal sin of pride. We need to remember that the money we have came from our Father, we need to thank Him for the financial means to provide for our families, but not go out and spend all the money on things we do not need. I am just as guilt as the next man, if not more-so. Love thy neighbor and thy Father, not money.

Last Devotional :’(

I went to my last devotional for a while today… :’( It was good, but man was I tired! Let’s see here… I got up this morning, after debating about sleeping in, but went to the library and tried to get some stuff done, but just wasn’t mentally there. Fortunately, I made it through rel class before going back to the library and practically falling asleep reading Alma. At that point I came home and started laundry and then had a bagel. Not sure what else I did all morning until devotional, but I found something to occupy myself I’m pretty sure. Ryan came over and looked for some more music, oh yeah! and I talked to Norma for a bit! It was great to talk to her and hear how things are going out there. She told me that the new Island’s is open in Temecula, so we’re going to have to do a get-together with Taugher once I get back.

Travis has been trying to get a hold of me about the calendar, I guess I didn’t explain to him well enough that it was going to take some time from when he gave me the ok to print to when he was going to have something to print. I still have to take all the webpages and make the printed layout, so it’s going to take me some time, but I think he wants it by the end of the week, so we’ll have to see what I can get done. No more sleep for me! I also decided that it was probably time for me to check my voice mail on my SD phone, and only had 7 messages or something. I was surprised to find one from Tina Gregg. I tried giving her a call back tonight, but she didn’t answer. I haven’t talked to her since I left. I hope that she is doing well…

Met with the bishop tonight briefly and then hung out in his office waiting for Sam to get done. We talked briefly about what we’re going to do for home teaching tomorrow, so I guess I need to sit down and figure out my role before we go over there. After that I came home, had some ice cream and watched the tail end of “Enemy of the State” on TV. Then I noticed that Amanda had called, so I called her back and we talked for a few. She’s already got a full car of people (4) going down and 5 people coming back up with her, so she doesn’t have room for Grace and her boyfriend, so it looks like they’re going to have to get comfortable in the back seat of my truck! I guess she is planning on leaving on Friday morning, so maybe we’ll leave about the same time and caravan down. I guess I should mention that I finally got a hold of Grace, or rather she got a hold of me, whatever, today and she and her boyfriend are looking for a ride to Temecula, but she doesn’t need a ride back to Rexburg. Hopefully we’ll have good weather so that all our stuff will be fine in the back of the truck, otherwise this trip could get interesting.

Well, I should be getting to bed now so that I can be somewhat attentive in my classes tomorrow. . . .
