Don’t take this the wrong way, but Rexburg will definitely be the highlight of this trip. Conference was cool, but it seemed like a lot of work. I’m definitely glad to have had the opportunity to be here and do this at least once, but it wasn’t quite what I guess I was expecting/hoping it to be. Maybe I was just too tired today to really think straight and my mind was mulling through some things instead of enjoying the moment.
It was really hard to get out of bed this morning, but I did it nonetheless. The line for breakfast was crazy. I’m guessing this Marriott only sees everyone come in for breakfast at the same time on during conference. Fortunately, they had a buffet, so they were able to get people in and out pretty fast. This did put us behind schedule a little but, but not drastically. It was well after 9 when we got to temple square and tried to figure out where the standby line was. We were finally directed to the right spot. I saw Clarissa waiting in line, said hi and then proceeded to the way end of the line. As we were getting close to the front it was getting awfully close to 10. Larilyn and I decided we’d just watch it in the Tabernacle where it was at least warmer. I was happy to get the opportunity to be in there and see the place. We sat right behind FOH so I could check out all the goodies. Next time I’ll remember to sit in the balcony so one isn’t looking up at the screens the entire time. I enjoyed just listening to the talks and the atmosphere, but the unpadded benches got old after a while.
After the first session we walked around temple square for a while. Before too long it was time to get ready for the second session. I’ve decided that I think the LDS church owns more metal detectors than most airports. Maybe they were rented, but they had everyone go through metal detectors before entering and they had a lot of entrances which each had their own set… The opportunity to be in the conference center was great and even from the nosebleed sections it didn’t seem too bad for something that seats over 20,000 people. I still can’t believe they are building something that size at BYU-Idaho. We ended up randomly sitting close to two people from the branch. We actually moved seats so we could sit next to them. It was nice to see someone I knew. They just drove up for the one session and weren’t planning on trying to get into any of the others, so I guess it wouldn’t be horrible to just do that. I feel as if one should try to get into all the sessions since you’re there, but it’s a lot of work to try and do the standby thing.
I thought about driving back to Idaho after the session, and may very well have done that if I wasn’t already booked into the hotel here. I also knew that I needed to try and get some sleep. Larilyn and I ended up getting some dinner and then I drove her to her aunt’s house where she is staying. I was going to come back to the hotel and go straight to bed, at about 8, but I wanted to see what was new in the world and get pictures posted from Idaho.
Tara tells me that they got a good storm today. Sib tells me that they had plenty of snow to go out and play in. I so wanted to be there when Sib was telling me about it, but I guess this is where I will learn my patience. We had lots of rain down here today in Salt Lake, but no snow at our level. You can see it just up a bit in the mountains, so it is really close.
I need to stop writing and get to sleep… No wonder nothing ever gets done… Good night!
