Yahoo Email Servers

Today was going OK until Yahoo/SBC/AT&T decided to mess with their smtp server. It wasn’t bad enough that they made a bunch of changes recently requiring you to send mail to a different server name than before and then they required you to send it securely, today they decided that if you wanted to send from an address different than the one you are authenticating with, you would need to link these two accounts together. Of course, their instructions for doing this didn’t match what you actually had to do on Yahoo’s website and worse they didn’t work! I spent a good two hours or more working on this for a client at the office today and then came home to deal with it at home! I ended up getting everyone setup with accounts on our outside webserver to send mail from using an auxiliary port, but that introduces its own fair share of problems because now people have more than one account and so on.

Other than that fun, the day went fairly well. I had a few meetings today in the office, which required me to be there earlier than normal and also inspired me to clean up my desk/office. I basically found drawers in which to hide things or space on the floor. Lauren came by to eat some candy and get some music for her drive to San Diego and I got some admin stuff done. That’s pretty much the extent of my story for the day and I’m going to bed.

Another One Bites the Dust

Well, Sprint made a pretty big mistake this morning. Bouse and I had been talking this weekend about how bad Sprint’s customer service has gotten and this and that. This reminded me to call them and continue to try and work out my bill. They wouldn’t give me what I used to be getting for free, but we worked out a deal where I’m paying about a third what they wanted to charge me. I may look at lowering my plan to end up at the same price, but I will loose some minutes. I used to have a problem with running out of my 2000 minutes, but lately I have barely been using 500 and have been doing nothing but texting. As I continue to spend more and more time in the office and less time on the road I just don’t seem to use the cell phone nearly as much.

Anyway, Sprint called me this morning – or rather their computer called me – to find out how dissatisfied I was with their service. They wanted me to take a three minute survey and kept telling me that I wasn’t going to be charged for the airtime on the call. I called customer service and told them to cancel my account right then and there because I was not going to do any business with a company that called me on my cell phone at their own will. Some nice lady in retention assured me that my number would be removed from all their call lists, but I assured her that I would be more than willing to pay an early termination fee to get rid of my accounts. So, it looks like we’ll be switching the business to Verizon. I may keep my personal sprint phone on a limited plan, but we’ll see how this whole thing works out.

The rest of the day went fairly well. The day flew by at work and while it didn’t feel like I did anything I know I must have. We had a board meeting tonight that just kept dragging on as they always do on useless things. Maybe I should set a time limit per item before we have to move on to keep these things rolling.

NETFLIX – We’re Going Blu-ray

I got this bad news from Netflix today:

You’re receiving this email because you have asked to receive high-definition movies in the HD DVD format. As you may have heard, most of the major movie studios have recently decided to release their high-definition movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format. In order to provide the best selection of high-definition titles for our members, we have decided to go exclusively with Blu-ray as well.

While we will continue to make our current selection of HD DVD titles available to you for the next several months, we will not be adding additional HD DVD titles or reordering replacements.

Toward the end of February, HD DVDs in your Saved Queue will automatically be changed to standard definition DVDs. Then toward the end of this year, all HD DVDs in your Queue will be changed to standard definition DVDs. Don’t worry, we will contact you before this happens.

I’m sad to see that this format is loosing. Why is it that the superior formats always loose the battle? I guess this means it is time to buy yet another DVD player. How many does one person really need?

Have I Done Any Good Today?

OK, I need to make this quick since I’ve been blogging already for an hour. I found some great links, comments and thoughts from reading some other sites tonight. I’m so far behind on my blog reading, but I am hoping to work on catching up this week.

Today was good. I got to sleep in to make up for Friday night, got prepared for Church and then had a great time there. We had talks on personal revelation, conversion and peace. Lauren reminded me of the question of “Have I done any good today?” which also further made me think about the suggestion for us to write where we have seen the hand of the Lord in our daily lives. I don’t think I’ve been doing very well in either of those suggestions. There are lots of good things I did today, but I can’t think of anything that stands out. I didn’t help an old lady cross the road, but I tried to be a good example to others, to be a good friend, to help others out, etc. The hand of the Lord is in everything. There wasn’t a close call on the freeway He saved me from, but there could have been something that He kept me far away from that I didn’t even realize. Of course I was blessed and nurtured in so many ways. How am I supposed to focus on one?

It was kind of quiet at the Dowden’s tonight which was rather nice for a change. I was finally able to give Kelsey and Jillian their pictures from Christmas, but I still need to finish some others.

We talked in Sunday School about the murmuring of Nephi’s brothers when they were in the wilderness. Nephi’s bow (& arrow) breaks and they immediately start complaining against him. When he is commanded to build a ship they laugh at him. Nephi doesn’t even ask where the tools are, but instead asks where he can find the ore to make the tools he will need for the ship. His brothers just don’t seem to ever catch on, time and time again they need to be reminded that Nephi is doing the work of the Lord and they are failing in every test. I don’t think I’m at either extreme here, but I’m pretty sure we can all do some work to complain less and be ready to help more.

With that being said, I really need to get to sleep.

Joel Dehlin: You Have the Right to Remain Visible

In response to: Joel Dehlin: You Have the Right to Remain Visible

Maybe it’s just cause I use a Mac and hope for the best in everything, but I don’t worry about someone stealing my credit card number over the Internet. I hope my computer is fairly locked down and sensitive information isn’t going to get out there. I have key information encrypted and I figure the rest while not necessarily public knowledge probably isn’t going to harm me or anyone else if it gets out. Heck, most of my life is already on the Internet, why not let it all out there?

We have to consider the costs of protecting our data. If the costs outweigh the benefits, then why bother? Anti-virus software drives me nuts. I firmly believe that the threat you need to worry about is one that your anti-virus software won’t be ready to deal with. It takes them days to get an update released and to your computer when a new virus is found. By that time the virus could have infected every computer on the planet. Doesn’t someone have to get infected so they can figure out how to prevent it?

As far as credit card information goes. The biggest worry is going to be when you go out to eat and give your card to the waitress or waiter. Who knows where they could be going with it or what they could be doing once they have written down or scanned the information from the card. Heck, I have multiple cards with RFID chips in them now, so you don’t even need to possess my car, just scan my rear-end with an RFID scanner and you’ll have multiple credit cards worth of information.

This is where merchants need to be more careful. They need to take extra steps to ensure that they are protected and they are dealing with who they are lead to believe they are dealing with. I further believe that while our law enforcement officers are busy with other things, some more time needs to be devoted to finding the people who are committing credit card fraud online.

As far as my website history goes, give it out. I have nothing to hide. You’ll probably find that most of my hits go to my own sites, Google, LDS.org, FaceBook and other blogs I read (normally through Google Reader – or the links on the right). The people that need to worry are the ones that have something to hide. I suggest if you have something to hide, instead of worrying about how to hide it, you instead work on removing that problem from your life. Now, I’m not saying that everyone doesn’t deserve some privacy, but let’s keep in mind that anything we do could be on the front page of the newspaper tomorrow. If you would mind if the whole world knew about it, maybe you should be setting a better example for all those that are indeed watching your every move. We can be tremendous examples to others, so let’s try to set our best foot forward always and “raise the bar” or “stand a little taller.”

Would Gordon B. Hinckley have anything to hide on his computer?

Shift Happens – Did You Know 2.0

Another link I found from Joel Dehlin that turned out to be quite interesting:

YouTube – Did You Know 2.0

This reminded me of a video we watched in my Leadership Class at CSU Fullerton. It is mind boggling how some things change the world. We really do need to prepare for the future and we have to solve the problems we created years before with new thinking.

The world is changing rapidly and not just with technology. The United States is not going to be #1 forever and we’re probably going to have some interesting changes ahead of us.

Let’s try and leave the world a better place for our children and grandchildren. Please.

Joel Dehlin: Internet Activity Around President Hinckley

Joel Dehlin, CIO of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, posted an interesting summary of some of the recent happenings regarding President Gordon B. Hinckley’s passing. Many of them were things I probably already knew, but hadn’t realized and I hadn’t seen some of the links he presented.

Joel Dehlin: Internet Activity Around President Hinckley

In the video of the youth dressing in their Sunday best and speaking about President Hinckley,  one of the girls quoted him saying, “See the sunlight through the clouds.” First off, this is an interesting tie in with the weather we had in the surrounding days. It is also one of those phrases that almost encapsulates President Hinckley. I think he saw the good in everything. If we could find the good in all things we would be much happier people and that in turn would improve the world.

Wicked

So I didn’t write yesterday because I didn’t get home until almost 2 this morning. I figured that was a good enough excuse to put it off until this evening. I went to Costco on the way to work and picked up a new Nikon Coolpix S700 digital camera. We had decided earlier in the week that the Sanyo digital cameras we got require a lot of work to get a good picture. I thought it could be worth a small investment in a little camera to hopefully get better pictures in those situations now. I haven’t really had much of an opportunity to try it out yet, but we did take a few pictures at Wicked.

WickedMaegan and I went to Wicked at the Pantages in Hollywood. The seats were amazing, Row L dead center. Traffic was horrendous, but the GPS nav was able to divert us around some of it. It also directed us to surface streets through downtown to Hollywood which I’m not exactly sure I agreed with because they were quite slow, but we got there and we made it on-time, so that is all that really matters. The show was great, even the third time seeing it. I wouldn’t mind going back and seeing it again! Maegan seemed to thoroughly enjoy the show although she seemed a little disappointed with how dirty LA is. I guess we now know why she has never been there before. All the characters were good. Megan Hilty was great as Glinda as always. Caissie Levy did good as Elphaba, but I think I liked the previous actresses I saw do the part better. Kristoffer Cusick did a good job at Fiyero as well, but the guy I saw from the tour wins hands down as he just fit the part so well.

We drove by the LA Temple on the way home and I finally got home just before 2. It was definitely a long day, but it was so much fun. We’re planning a trip to the Los Angeles Temple on March 1st if anyone is interested in joining us.

It was really hard to get myself out of bed this morning for the World Wide Leadership Training, but I did it nonetheless. I made it to the stake center with a few minutes to spare and discovered that they were having all sorts of technical difficulties. Sister Dowden tried to get me to go help, but I just didn’t want to get involved. They finally got the satellite feed going, but they were having problems playing back the recorded feed as they were trying to delay the broadcast an hour. We ended up just watching the second half and we will catch up on the first part later. It was all good, but it seems like the same old stuff. I guess that means we have more work to be done and need to continue to raise the bar to make better homes and wards.

After the broadcast I went out to breakfast with the Dowden’s and then went to work for a few hours. I got things together for the board meeting, took care of some emails and then came home. I was debating about going for a bikeride or taking a nap. I was planning on getting through the mail and receipts. I accomplished none of the above and I’m not really sure why. I did get pictures posted and started catching up on some of the news.

I found out that my Sunday School teachers are leaving me left and right tonight. Not only am I loosing Stephanie in two months, but Marissa and Kyle are leaving. Stephanie, the amazing Stephanie, is stepping in for Marissa tomorrow, so I’m going to owe her something big that is yet to be determined. Here is one more thing I was going to do today that we can mark off as not getting done. That would be getting to bed early, so I’m going to work on finishing this up and trying to get to sleep before 11.

MSN Direct Woes

I decided to sleep in this morning. I actually woke up before six, but it was about 7:30 before I was able to get myself out of bed! I had a productive day at the office and got my work email down to 6 messages! My to do list is still growing, but many of them I am waiting on time or other people to be able to check off.

Institute tonight was good. When we first started the class I thought our pace was a little slow and we were getting a little too detailed, but I am really enjoying the pace and the detail now. Things I never know or never realized are becoming so much clearer to me. Sister Dowden does a great job leading the discussions.

Larilyn, Maegan and I went out to BJ’s after Institute because Maegan was starving and neither of them had been there before. We’re checking things off her list of things to do almost as fast as we’re adding them!

I finally got this MSN Direct service working on my Nuvi 680. It took two phones calls to them this morning and a reset of the cord/antenna. It could have been the reset that did it or it could have been the switch between markets that did it as well. (We changed it from Riverside to San Diego.) I then quickly learned that while you have access to all markets, you really only get one market’s data at a time. For example, if you’re at home in Fallbrook (San Diego market) and are planning a drive to somewhere in Los Angeles, it won’t know anything about the LA market until after you have travelled into it. I’ve also discovered that the service is really not that great. I have full coverage in my house, but next to nothing in my car around town. Apparently I got enough coverage somewhere along the line to get some traffic information for LA because when I got home tonight I found that I had freeway speeds for LA, the problem is I don’t know how old they were! It sounds like they really need to find a way to integrate both the FM Traffic and the MSN Direct service simultaneously into the device. Most people would probably even pay for twice the annual fees if they knew they could actually get data that would help them while driving.

Well, enough of a rant there, I’m off to bed! Tomorrow… WICKED!

New Desk Pieces

I would like the record to show that I was in the office at 8:06 this morning. Thank you very much. Yes, i was the first one in! Tara text me last night to tell me she had a flat tire that she was going to take care of in the morning so she would be late. I figured that I could be the big boy and cover the office in the morning. Little did I know that by showing up so early the phone would be ringing and I would be working on figuring out accounting from over a year ago! I then spent some time on the phone with Quickbooks, but the good news is we were able to fix our data file. We’ll find out later if it is still sending out statements to customers that owe $0.25!

I feel like I didn’t get much done at work today. The rest of the day was spent in meetings or rearranging the office. I got the new pieces for my desk today. Nathaniel and I put them in which seemed to take most of the afternoon by the time I actually got back to working. The 5″ made a big difference which I think will be very nice. The new stand for the printer was probably a bit pricey, but it looks good and gave me some more storage. I need to go back in tomorrow, get the place cleaned up the rest of the way and get to work!

Maegan and I ended up joining Batch and Christa for Cheesecake this evening. Batch had to take a computer and his iPhone in and it had been a few weeks since we’d been to Cheesecake, so of course we took the opportunity and ran with it. Maegan had never been there before and she made me branch out and try something new! She gave me a few options to choose from – all things I had never considered ordering – and I chose the Pasta Da Vinci. It was pretty good, but I don’t know if it will be on my favorites list.

Now I must get to bed and we’ll see what tomorrow brings.

Garmin Nuvi 680

Again I’m up too late and up to no good. Today went fairly well at the office, no real complaints to lodge. Jim and I went and home taught Amy this evening which went well and then I went to Costco. I had been thinking about getting a GPS on and off for some time now and for some reason woke up this morning determined to get one. I got the Garmin Nuvi 680 and activated the MSN Direct service so i can get traffic updates on it, which I believe will be my primary purpose in having it. I guess I’ll try it for  a while and see if it is actually useful and if it seems there are any features that I am missing and need to upgrade to another unit for. That’s why I love Costco!

And Mr. Bouse hooked me up with some sweet seats for Wicked this weekend.

Well, I’m off to bed and I certainly didn’t read my five pages for the Hinckley Challenge today, but I worked on magnifying one of my callings! I think that’s the real Hinckley challenge – to just be amazing at our callings. I have a long way to go.

New Light of Day

What a day. The new First Presidency was announced this morning. I watched the press conference at work and was pleased with the call of Elder Uchtdorf and am interested to see where this will take us. The press conference was good and kept me thinking for a while. For the record, the rain was gone and it was a beautiful day here in Southern California.

We hung a bunch of pictures in my office today so it finally looks like we have moved in. I have a few frames left to fill, but will need to go through some more pictures to get more variety. I got through a lot of email today because it was fairly quiet and can actually see all that is left on one screen!

Stacy taught a good lesson tonight at FHE on compassion. I could come up with some great things to write, but I need to get to sleep.

I went to the Dowden’s after FHE to take Diana the chocolate doughnut holes I forgot to bring yesterday. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to stay for just a few minutes, and it was 10 o’clock before I left.

I think I need to be in the office in the morning, so I had better get myself to bed. I’m ready for the new light.

First Presidency Announced

A very good press conference this morning:

Thomas S. Monson is the new President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with Henry B. Eyring as First Counselor and Dieter F. Uchtdorf as Second Counselor.

I’m anxious to see what they will bring. I think that Elder Uchtdorf was a good choice that will help bring the Church forward with the growing international membership.

See the LDS Newsroom for more information as it becomes available.

I think the weather has been very interesting to match the news. We had the rain yesterday when they were in the Temple in Salt Lake City to sustain and ordain President Monson and now today, at least here in Southern California, it is beautiful. We have mostly clear sunny skies and I hear we got a good amount of snow overnight which will help sustain life throughout the year.

The Rain Brings New Life

It never fails. I can get home at a reasonable time with full intent on getting to bed by 10 and it ends up being nearly 11 before I even start writing! I got lost reading some things about the press conference tomorrow and setting up a group on facebook promoting it. We will find out who the new president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be. Tradition would hold that it will be Elder Thomas S. Monson, the longest serving member of the Quorum of the Twelve (currently Fourteen), however it could be any worthy male. In theory we all should each get a confirmation of his call because we will need to sustain him at the next conference.

I’m honestly more anxious to see who his counselors will be. I read an interesting article from the Salt Lake Tribune which talked about each of the men he was likely to choose from and there are so many good choices of counselors I don’t know how anyone can choose one. I think it is too early for David A. Bednar to be called, but he would be amazing in the position I imagine. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland could probably do wonders as well. There are many others very capable of serving in that capacity as well.

I woke up to rain this morning. I absolutely love waking up to the rain. It is just so refreshing and always makes me think of having the opportunity to wash away whatever things we need swept away and giving us the opportunity to start anew – and clean. It’s interesting the timing of the rain lately. We had rain last Sunday, the day of President Hinckley’s passing and then again today, the day before the Quorum of the Twelve announces the new President of the Church. I tend to think of it more as washing the earth and anointing it for a new prophet. Of course we don’t need to wash away any of the wonderful things that Hinckley has done for us, but maybe it is more of a call to repentance for those who are in need. Having never been in the church under another prophet, this will certainly be the beginning of a new era for me.

President Hinckley brought the Church into the 21st century. He took control of the media and kept the Church in the spotlight, favorably. He wasn’t afraid to go out there and talk with news reporters, something I’m terrified of doing. He made the designs for the newer smaller temples and presumably had a large part in the way the current temples operate. He oversaw the construction of nearly 80 temples during his call. Roughly one third of the members of the Church today were baptized while he was President. I’m one of those and that is just an amazing figure to fathom.

In our branch council meeting this morning we had some rare extra time and discussed one word summaries of President Hinckley and then if these traits were skills or attitudes. After listing many things like charitable, loving, compassionate, temples, duty and clear sighted we went through and found that most of them were attitudes or combinations of attitudes and skills. Most of the traits we listed were not purely skills. What that means to me is that we have a huge amount of control over our lives, simply by changing out attitudes to the situations we are put in. I clearly need to exercise some attitudes to learn some skills to help make the world a better place. President Hinckley was a humorous man, but he never had fun at another’s expense. Sometimes he may have taken the expense on one of his own jokes, but I don’t think they were ever ill hearted. He was admired by so many not of our faith that he must have mastered charity, a Christ-like love, at an early age.

On to other subjects, I ate way too much this evening. I probably should have stopped at break the fast, but I went over to the Dowden’s and had more food, then more and then dessert. I forgot the doughnut holes at home this morning, so I’ll have to take them to Diana later in the week.

Stephanie taught an amazing lesson today for Sunday School. I learned way more than normal and hadn’t realized things even after reading the material three times that she pointed out to us! I guess it just shows you can’t do it alone.

In priesthood – in short – we talked about how to ensure that we always have the Spirit with us. Obviously we need to be mindful of things that would push it away like procrastination or not keeping our priorities straight. Brother Rider compared it to maintaining a level of physical fitness. It just isn’t possible to maintain an achieved level without some exact level of work each week. It may be as little as twenty minutes twice a week, but without it you will fall back. You will have the knowledge of the better fitness level, but won’t physically be able to attain it without more than the level required to maintain – and will have to do “make up” work. We need to keep our priorities straight and not stay up so late that we are late in the morning and constantly put off nourishing ourselves with the Scriptures or other good sources of knowledge.

Kristin posted a link to a site that is encouraging reading the Book of Mormon in 97 days in honor of President Hinckley’s 97 years of life with us. I’m thinking about taking the challenge, but want to make sure I can commit to keeping it before I do officially.

Well, speaking of not staying up to late, and 30 minutes and .10″ of rain later, I think it’s about time to sign off and get some sleep.

Salt Lake Tribune – LDS Church First Presidency to be organized Monday

This article contains some interesting information on some of the people that President Monson may pick from to serve as his counselors. That’s not a decision I would want to be involved in because there are so many great men that could be called to serve. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland could be great. I think David A. Bednar is too young to be called to the position, but he could most certainly rise to the occasion.

Salt Lake Tribune – LDS Church First Presidency to be organized Monday

Tomorrow will be interesting…
