Setting Up Office

It seems like I got a lot done today, but it also seems like all I did was make a mess! I scored good at Target this morning with the chocolate. I decided to limit myself to twelve bags of dark M&M’s. Normally it seems that I just empty the shelf and take everything I can find, but today there seemed to be a lot to choose from. I didn’t find much other than chocolate at Target, but I did get some cards and some wrapping paper for next year.

The one thing I was really hoping to find was some LED Christmas lights to put on the house for next year. I’d rather buy them at 50% off and hold them than buy them next year. Well, I decided to try Home Depot and Lowe’s to see if they had anything, and neither did. I was able to take care of a few things at Lowe’s that I needed to get off my list though, so it was good to be there. They had essentially no Christmas stuff left. I understand they did some deep discounts before Christmas to make sure they weren’t left with any inventory. I was also looking for possible gifts for people I hadn’t found them for yet. I completely struck out on that front. I also stopped at Best Buy to look for gifts, but didn’t find anything that I was feeling good about and the line was way too long to check out.

I swung down to Costco to get gas and then decided to go inside and do some shopping. It was mostly groceries and stuff. I was amazed at how empty the place was the day after Christmas. I guess everyone was shopping at places that had specials and that’s not Costco. Shortly after I got home, had lunch and got the car unloaded and was organizing the pantry to get all the goodies in, Mr. Batchelor called me and asked if there was anything I needed with a truck. I’ve been wanting to get the office setup at home for a while, so I asked if he would go desk shopping with me.

We went and visited our friends at Murrieta Office Furniture and got essentially the same desk I have at the office. I was able to use the extra bridge which was nice to one, use and two, not have to purchase! We came back and got that setup just in time to realize that there is no light in the bedroom I’m using as the office. So, while he returned the truck, I went to Costco for the second time today and purchased some lamps. I was worried they wouldn’t provide enough light in here, but two of them actually seem to do a pretty good job. I actually like them so much that I might think about going back to get more of them for other rooms and uses.

So, it seems like I will be cleaning the house tomorrow and probably working on getting more of the office setup. In the long term I’m going to have to run some ethernet from the main switch into the office and before summer comes around I’m sure I’ll need to install a ceiling fan.

Batch and I watched Get Smart tonight. I was actually pretty impressed. Most movies made from TV shows, especially the older ones, just don’t ever make the grade. This actually seemed very natural to me, maybe because Get Smart has been a bit more distant to me, or maybe because they were more true to the actual characters and their roles. I’d say the story line was very similar to a typical episode as well which I’m sure helped. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it.

I got busted today for using the MySpace application on my iPhone. I’ll admit that I signed in to remind myself of someone’s name and then minutes later I got a text from Nathaniel that asked me about the iPhone. I guess MySpace brodcasted a message that I added the MySpace for iPhone application. I must actually admit that MySpace works way better in the application on the iPhone that I have ever seen it work on their website in any browser. It probably helps that there are no ads!

Well, I should probably call it a night before I turn into a pumpkin. Good night to all and to all a good night. 🙂

Another Trip to Colton

I made another trip to Ashley in Colton today. I had volunteered to pick things up for Sister Rodriguez when I was headed up there the other day. She found some stuff she wanted to buy yesterday and I offered to help if I could. It gave me a nice break in the middle of the day to spend with her. Once we solved the puzzle of how to get the couch in the front door I came back to get some work done at the office and to get Nathaniel back on his way to fixing the pallet shelving problem. I think in the future we are just going to go new as it has probably cost us just as much dealing with these changes and such as it would to have gotten what we wanted in the first place.

I finally got my trash cans today. I was a little worried this morning since I hadn’t received them yet and it was trash day. I just put some trash out at the curb in bags, hoping they would at least take that, even though it was only about a quarter of what I had to throw away. I just didn’t want to go through the work if I was just going to have to bring it back in tonight. I’ve already filled the new cans and have a little pile of recyclables to go out next week. I’m sure after next week I will be all caught up. I also reprogramed my sprinklers after discovering that they were going off three times each day. I’ll need to keep an eye on things to make sure they are getting enough water, but I would certainly imagine that once a day would be more than sufficient. That should help me cut back on my water usage and help our shortage here in SoCal.

I went over to have dinner with Sister Rodriguez tonight. We got kind of a late start, so I missed institute for the second week in a row which I was afraid would happen.

I was going to try running tonight without the air conditioner, but after opening the windows upstairs and climbing into bed, I realized that without a ceiling fan it just wasn’t going to happen. I also have to wonder though exactly how much energy is really lost in running the AC at times when the windows could be open. If it’s cool outside, it shouldn’t take much to cool off the house and then it should stay cool from that point on, shouldn’t it? Maybe I should really look into a whole house fan as I know that would be cheaper than running the AC. I wonder about leaving the windows open downstairs though at night. I’m not really sure why, I just do. I guess the alarm system could handle my worries down there if I armed it at night with a delay on the motions. I also need to pick out and get some ceiling fans so they can be installed next week.

Day at Home

I spent most of the day at home. I had people coming throughout the day for various things and was busy making progress. I got almost all of the baseboards and windowsills vacuumed this morning before the electrician and pest control came. The washer and dryer showed up and the delivery guys had fun lugging those beasts upstairs. They did a remarkably good job getting them to fit in the laundry room which is great. I was expecting them to not fit so nicely side by side, so I am impressed.

After the pest control was done I had to leave the house for a few hours so I went and got my refund for the couch that wasn’t going to work and then went to SK to purchase the sofa and loveseat for the living room. Batch was kind enough to pick that up for me on his way back to the office and we got it all setup. I had been working with Ashley Furniture here in Murrieta on some other things. Shelly suggested I give the store in Colton a try and they were able to give me the items for will call today and give me a much better price to make it worthwhile to drive there! I think I saved close to a thousand dollars and got things faster by driving to Colton!

Nathaniel and Batch were kind enough to drive up in the truck to get my new furniture and then stay to help set it up. We made sure to stop at Cheesecake in Riverside on the way back and then I made, if you can call it that, strawberry shortcake after we got finished assembling everything.

After I get gas tomorrow, I feel like things will be complete enough to actually enjoy the house instead of just constantly working to get it ready to live in. It will have actually only taken me a week which Is pretty impressive! There will, of course, always be more things to do and I have a long list of upgrades to make and such, but I think I can actually start enjoying it and just having weekend projects instead of spending my life cleaning. I almost can’t wait to use my new washer and dryer tomorrow night!

Back to the Office

It was almost weird being in the office today. It seemed like it had been so long since I had been there – and it had in some ways. I did kind of enjoy my eleven minute commute to work this morning. It was weird not having to change radio stations, or even ham repeaters as I drove. Heck, the drive really wasn’t even long enough to talk to anyone, and I didn’t. I was at work extra early and then started going through my emails. I had amassed quite a few that I didn’t deal with on my phone as the days had passed, so I tried to catch up with those and get some bills paid which probably should have been paid earlier and then started to work through my stack of mail from the last week or so. I actually made a pretty good dent and then headed out to leave a bit early. I wanted to get some shopping done and keep moving forward with the house.

Tara (Tata) and I went furniture shopping after I went to Trader Joe’s and managed to get nothing that was actually on my list to get! How’d I manage that? We found a good looking table and sofa set at SK and then went to Ashly where we found even more good stuff. The things at Ashly did seem to be more expensive in general, but the dining room table was actually a bit cheaper at Ashly. I’m going to give a list to Sister Rodriguez and see if she can work on the pricing at all, although I really just want to get the furniture and get it in here. I’m tired of having an empty house with no where to sit and eat. I posted pictures on Facebook of all the things we liked and clearly will need some help narrowing things down. Once we get the basics there will be all sorts of other things to work on as well – like the theater.

Nathaniel came over tonight to check the place out and helped me get a few things done. We got a lot done in the kitchen and tried out some of the things I had bought previously at the store. He was able to get my shelf moved as he found the hidden latch and we unpacked the rest of the kitchen appliances. He also helped me deal with the ants that found not only the chocolate on the island, but the motherload in the corner of the family room. Those darn ants are driving me absolutely crazy. I’ve got Fowler Pest Control coming tomorrow to spray and hopefully that will help me to start winning the war. I’m afraid that things might get worse before they get better though.

Speaking of tomorrow, I’ve got the electrician coming in the morning to get going on the ceiling fans (which I don’t have yet), pest control, the washer and dryer being delivered and Angela coming by. It sounds like a pretty crazy day at home and I’m looking forward to making progress. The best news is that the day after tomorrow – I get gas so I can start cooking and will be able to have hot water!

Moved

Wow, things got kind of crazy last week. We didn’t end up closing until late Thursday, as I kind of imagined to begin with. I’m still not happy I signed something saying I would be in Tuesday when I didn’t get in till Thursday, but this is all past now and I should move on.

Batch and Bouse helped me move Thursday. I was all packed up and ready for them when they came and we knocked it out in under two hours. Bouse did a great job loading the truck and we could have fit everything in a 14 ft box van the way he packed it all! We did some shopping, worked on getting the garage fire door replaced, ate and some other misc stuff while we waited, hoping it would cool down and for someone to confirm that we had at least funded, if not recorded yet. We finally got the funding notice at lunch and got the call that we had recorded just as we were getting ready to unload the truck.

The first night in the house was interesting. The AC upstairs didn’t want to work. I had Gardner Co. come out and take a look at it in the morning and of course it worked fine. He thinks that maybe it is something wrong with the ball bearings in the fan on the compressor. It seems like it doesn’t want to work when it is hot. Well isn’t that when I need it to work? That made the first night interesting, but it has been working great since then.

I became a locksmith when I had to essentially disassemble the front door to get the new lock on. I’m glad I was finally able to get it to work because at one point I couldn’t get the dead-bolt off and I’m sure I had broken it beyond the point at which it would have functioned. Once I got things figured out, I was able to do the other two locks in a matter of minutes – although they functioned like they were supposed to instead of not wanting to come apart like the front door did. I did decide to drive to Hemet to get the Medeco locks, and I still have my front door one on order due to a custom color issue.

I’ve been to Costco at least three times to get stuff. I filled up Bouse’s truck once and my car twice with stuff. The pantry is getting stocked slowly as well as the fridge and freezer. The fridge came on Friday and is beautiful. I had a heck of a time shopping at Albertson’s – actually just the self checkout was a hassle. I don’t think I will do that again with a full cart. To top it off, I forgot to type in my phone number for the preferred card savings which means I got totally ripped off on what I bought!

It was great having a five minute drive to church this morning. As I was getting ready to walk out the door I remembered I hadn’t read yet and decided to search for something to read. I ended up at Mormon 9, reading about worthiness. A few minutes later when I walked into branch council, President Mattson asked us to turn to Mormon 9! That was kind of interesting. I started getting antsy towards the end of priesthood this afternoon. I haven’t been sitting for that long for a few days now and while it felt good at first, it was starting to bother me.

I’ve been cleaning like mad. My hand hurts from vacuuming, washing surfaces, mopping and killing ants. The house is starting to come together. Some of the boxes have been emptied, there are clothes in my closet, food in the pantry, dishes in the cabinets. I couldn’t find my silverware after moving and it also seems like I am missing some of my glasses. Either we lost them in the move, didn’t bring them or they were stolen out of the shed with the mower a few years ago. I’m starting to lean towards the stolen aspect, although they could easily have been left in the shed and covered up with other items. I went out and bought some new silverware, and will probably need to get some more glasses and flatware soon.

It has been kind of quiet around the house. I’ve had music going almost nonstop, but that doesn’t take away the loneliness. I almost feel like I need to be listening to the radio or something so I at least can hear another human voice that hasn’t completely been prerecorded. I think I’m starting to understand why people have pets.

Hopefully my new sectional couch should be coming tomorrow. I can’t decide if I should try and get it reversed from what they are probably sending me so the longer side can go down the wall instead of across the back or if I should just take it. There are advantages both ways. From looking online, it looks like it is also a sleeper, but I didn’t know that. I guess I should just be happy that I won’t be carrying it in as I paid for in house delivery. It sounds like my kitchen table won’t be in for a few weeks though. I’m hoping to order furniture for the rest of the house soon – at least the dining room and probably living room this week. Sister Rodriguez has some catalogs I can look through to get stuff at close to wholesale cost. I think Mandi said she would be available tomorrow to look at furniture, so we may just have to see. I do need to get some (office) work done tomorrow, but maybe can make it a half day or something.

I’m still not sure what to do with the upstairs bonus room although I am leaning towards theater. That will take away the hassle of pulling wires downstairs which will be nice. I’m definitely calling about the ceiling fans tomorrow and hope that I will be able to get them installed late this week. In addition to the fans, it will be nice to actually have light at night instead of relying on lights from adjoining hallways or bathrooms to work. I’m trying to decide where to put the fans and am almost thinking of just asking him (the electrician) to go to town and prewire all the rooms. I might not need one in the living room as I think that would just look strange.
