Our Love Story

Well, it has certainly been some time since I’ve taken the opportunity to write at all. In fact, ever since I met Megan I haven’t been so good at writing – I guess it’s just that we’ve been so busy and always had other things to do.

People have been asking for nearly a year now, and Cheesecake Factory finally made the incentive for me to write our love story down and submit it in their contest. Some of this has been covered, and some hasn’t, so I’m just going to try and get it all here in one spot for good!

Megan and I really met when Kenny invited her over to my house for movie night. I had some friends coming over to watch Twilight when it first came out on DVD. I should back up to say that we had kind of met a few weeks earlier at church, when we actually sat next to each other, but didn’t even so much as say a word to each other. The following week we spoke briefly at the Dowden’s, but the ice wasn’t really broken until the night she was here at the house. We started talking and I played her Brad Paisley’s new song, “Then.” I remember that Kenny and I were playing with iTunes DJ and she had started requesting a number of Brad Paisley songs, so I had to see if she had heard his latest. She instantly liked it. One of the other girls that was here, Ashley, was going to be having her birthday Tuesday and we were going to be going to Disneyland. I invited Megan to join us for dinner at Cheesecake Factory before.

When Tuesday came we met up at Cheesecake and then to my surprise she decided to join us afterward at Disneyland. We stayed up way too late that night and spent most of the evening talking. We started texting on our way home that night and the volume only went up from there. I was spending that week at the San Diego Temple for our semi-annual offering in righteousness where we spend most of the day there. So, I was up early the next morning and she was up early for work and we started talking each morning and each night on my way home from the temple. (It’s an hour long drive.) That Saturday I couldn’t decide if i was going to go to the temple or if I was going to call my week done and do something different. One way or another we ended up going to Disneyland – and of course going to Cheesecake Anaheim (with Teal as our waitress).

As what seemed to be par for our relationship, we were out way too late, especially considering the lack of sleep we’d had all week. Megan was going to spend the night at a mutual friend’s house – Sally & Bill (who incidentally had basically schemed this whole relationship) – but we didn’t get there till 2:15 Sunday morning! Unfortunately, they had left the house locked up so we had to try to break in instead of waking them up. After about a half hour of trying all sorts of things and talking about not wanting to wake people up, we finally called her mom who called to wake up Sally. That sure gave us interesting stories to be told the next day at church as I was currently serving in branch council with Bill.

After church on Sunday, she came back to my house where we sat and talked the evening away. We went to branch prayer came back to my house and threatened to have a pillow fight. At some point the evening ended and I decided to give her a night off on Monday. I guess I was worried that she would figure out that too much of me was a bad thing and I would scare her off. That Tuesday we were texting at work and she had eaten something spicy and thought she was going to die, or something to that effect. I asked her what she wanted to do for her last night here on earth – i.e. her last wish – and she couldn’t really come up with something. While I would have chosen Cheesecake, maybe we had just had too much, and she had mentioned this other restaurant Ancho’s previously. I suggested we try Ancho’s and then go go-carting, something else she had mentioned previously. Well, while we were planning all this Kenny showed up at my house, so he came along for the evening as well.

We had a great time and again were out too late. We were already planning on going to Disneyland the following day, April 1st. I actually had a friend who suggested the outing, so I started inviting people, including Megan. She told me that she had the day off from work. Well, long story short, it ended up just being the two of us at Disneyland that day. Since it was April fools day, I decided to tell facebook that she and I were married – and also to see how she would take it. I told her that facebook was being weird and that she needed to check it before we left. I don’t know what she thought – other than I was crazy – but she decided we could be married for the day and confirmed the relationship. We later started making up crazy stories that we were having our Disney fairy tale wedding that day and so forth. The one thing I regret doing was not buying her some kind of ring from Disneyland and putting it on her finger that day. We both were getting phone calls asking about what was going on. I don’t remember all that happened that day, but it was the day that I knew. It was also the second consecutive day that we would always see each other from there on out.

The following day we had no plans to be together, but at the last minute she came down for institute, a scripture study class we have at church. That was the day that I knew my feelings weren’t completely off base and she must have felt something back. We already had plans that Friday night to watch a movie, so she came down. That weekend was our church’s general conference where we watch various sessions on television, so she stayed in Murrieta so we could watch conference together. She invited me to dinner with her family on that Saturday, so we went there and I went to priesthood session with her father. We stayed and played games where I got to meet the whole family. Talk about intimidating: They were asking me all the questions!

Sunday we were back watching conference and we had plans to take Monday off. I was still worried about scaring her away. Well, another Cheesecake fanatic fan of mine called me up and said, “let’s go to Cheesecake,” the four magic words to which I immediately reply, “Let’s go!” I, of course, called up Megan and informed her that she was not going to be getting the night off after all. We haven’t had a night off since that Tuesday, thankfully, to date.

Back when I was trying to fulfill her last wish the previous week, she had mentioned something she doesn’t even remember. Brad Paisley’s Then was playing in the car and she said something to the effect of how she’d love to hear him sing it live. At the time, Brad was going to be playing at Stagecoach festival and I was thinking that would be a great place to propose. I guess my timeline wasn’t fast enough though and I got the hint that week to speed things up. We looked at some rings so I got an idea of what she wanted and decided Friday to call Zales and tell them to get the ring ready. I had that ring burning a hole in my pocket Friday night, all day Saturday when we went to Sea World and then Sunday morning. I had planned an Easter egg hunt for Megan Sunday and told her about it earlier.

We went to her parents for church Easter Sunday morning, and then had brunch at their house with the whole family. We rushed back to Murrieta to go to the singles ward here and I told her that I needed to swing by the house to get my stuff together. She wanted just to stay in the car, but I told her that I needed a few minutes and it would be a good time for her to do her Easter egg hunt. I had made most of the eggs fairly easy to find, and they all had a slip of paper in them. Most of them were lyrics to our song, Then. When she put them in the right order, it spelled out the location of the remaining egg. It spelled out pancake. So, she looked in the fridge and didn’t find an egg. Then she looked in the pantry and still no egg. She was starting to give up when she realized the pancake griddle was on the counter, not it’s normal spot. She looked all around it and didn’t find anything. I asked if she knew it had a drawer at which point she started pulling it out. By the time she had the egg opened, I was down on one knee behind her. I asked her to be my wife as she pulled the ring out of the egg.

Needless to say, we were way late for church. And there wasn’t anything that I needed from the house, other than for that ring to be on her finger and not burning a hole in my pocket! She totally wasn’t expecting it because I had led her to believe it was coming in a few more weeks and she knew I wouldn’t pop the question until I had asked her dad. What she didn’t know was that I had been trying to work up the courage to ask him – and find the time to do so – all morning long! I lingered and stalled at their house that morning trying to get him alone. It wasn’t done the way I planned it, but it worked out just fine. (I was planning to ask him the following week at the Redlands Temple.)

So, we really met March 21st and were engaged April 12th. There were a few more trips to Cheescake Factory over the coming months (I had the help of Discover Card in figuring out our timeline of dining at the Cheesecake Factory.) It was pretty much non-stop tlll the wedding. Megan went looking for dresses the next weekend while I was at a sealing, then I went to the Redlands temple with her parents, where I was planning on asking for her hand in marriage. We took a trip to Arizona to visit my grandma (and get a box she had been holding for me). During the trip we went horseback riding at the OK Corral. Then we were taking engagement pictures in Laguna Beach – followed, of course, by the original Cheesecake Factory that I had wanted to go to for a LONG time in Redondo Beach.

The next weekend we were shopping for cakes and then we were off to Pennsylvania and West Virginia for a week where we visited the Cheesecake Factory in Pittsburgh and Brad Paisley’s hometown of Glen Dale, WV. May 30th we were back in Redondo Beach at the Cheesecake Factory after going to the Point Fermin Lighthouse to scatter my mom’s ashes, something else I had been meaning to do for a long time. Her bridal shower was the following weekend, followed by her endowment. On the last free weekend she took her bridal portraits and we were busy with other things.

We were married June 26th in the Los Angeles Temple. Unfortunately, there was no Cheesecake involved, but we did stop at Chic-fil-a for a snack on our way home. Our reception was the following day and on our way to our honeymoon, you can bet our first stop – and our first real out to dinner meal was at the Cheesecake Factory Pasadena.

We had a lovely honeymoon in Santa Barbara at the Fess Parker Doubletree Resort. We spent a few days there exploring before going further north, but called it and came home early. (We were probably running low on Cheesecake after all that wedding cake.)

There’s lots to say from there, but I think I’m going to quit while I’m ahead today.

Getting Close

So it has been well over a month since I’ve even taken a few minutes to journal. That is the one thing that I would go back and change over the past few months. I wish I had taken the time to write much more. Apparently my Twitter integration on my website has been down for about that long, so those blogs haven’t even been posting!

Things are going good. Megan and I are getting married in 8 days and 14 hours. I really can’t wait for it all to be over and for us to be married, sealed together for time and all eternity. I probably could have done without all this hoopla, but I’m fairly certain that if we can make it through all this mess we won’t have much of a problem with life.

I’ve been really busy at work. I haven’t been able to catch up since we got back from West Virginia/Pennsylvania. I’m trying to hold my emails to 630-something and I still have about 300 that I haven’t even read. I’m really trying to do my best to get caught up before I leave for the honeymoon as I don’t want any of that being in the back of my mind while we are relaxing.

Speaking of the travels, we had a great time and loved all that time together. I still can’t believe she wasn’t sick of my by the end of the week.

I finished reading the book Sister Dowden recommended, Beloved Bridegroom. I found that it was more of a temple prep book than a marriage prep book as it was more focused on the marriage of Christ to His church, us. I did really enjoy it and there were some great comparisons to the marriage that Megan and I will be entering into next week. I found many of the old traditions very interesting to learn about.

I’ve started reading this new book, First Comes Love, which President Clegg gave us. It has some good advice in there, but I haven’t really come across anything new. Sometimes it is just good to hear the same thing again. I know I can be a slow learner.

I’m so lost as to what to do for our honeymoon. I wanted it to be a surprise to Megan, but then I decided to let her in on the basics of the plans to make sure it was what she wanted to do. Of course, she says whatever I plan will be fine. The plan is to drive up the coast and stay at a few different places. I was thinking on my drive home tonight though that maybe we shouldn’t spend two nights at three places and instead we should spend three nights at two places or something like that. I don’t know how often we’re going to want to be changing locations. Maybe I should just pick a central spot and we can be done with it too.

Megan received her endowments this past Saturday.

Megan made President Smith cry when he learned that we both had been true to the law of chastity. He said that so few people at our age, even members of the church, have been able to save themselves for their marriage. I can’t imagine it any other way.

We haven’t been doing very good with out question book and probably aren’t going to get through all the questions before we get married unless we really get our act together and start getting through them.

I’m not really looking forward to this weekend or many of the pieces of next week. While it will culminate in a great event, I’m going to go my first Saturday without seeing Megan for most of the day. She has bridal portraits and so will be getting hair and makeup done before she takes them in the early afternoon and then has lunch planned with her mom and Sally. It will probably be late afternoon or early evening before I even get to see her. I know I have lots to do around the house, I’m just sad. The other thing is that I probably won’t get to see her at all next Wednesday and Thursday. She’s going to have a bachelorette party on Wednesday night and then Thursday will be busy with getting things done for the wedding. I understand I’m supposed to pick her up on the way to the temple on Friday morning, but can you seriously imagine me going from Tuesday night to Friday morning without so much as seeing her?

This could be too much for me… I’m going to cry myself to sleep now.

Meet the Parents

First off, I’m not such a fan of waiting for Megan to drive home, but I do really like that it gives me some time to blog. We had our parents meet each other tonight at the Prosser’s house which I think worked out pretty well. They seemed to hit it off and I don’t think we came across any major road-bumps. I enjoyed having it at the Prosser’s and allowing them to get to know my parents as well and giving my parents a bit more of a glimpse into my life and that of the church.

Work went well today. I was only in the office for about half the day and then was driving around. Jenna and I talked about Megan and our marriage/relationship for a while. We seemed confident that things were going to work out. Jenna is getting married in a little under a year and I had expressed that there was no way I could wait that long. She told me that they are trying to save up to buy a house, so that’s the reason for waiting which makes sense to me. I’m glad that I have many of those things already straight in my life.

Megan and I were talking about jewelry for the wedding today. I rediscovered one of the things that I love about her. She is so sensible with money. She’s frugal, but not extreme. We were looking at bracelets for her and she kicked many out because they cost over $500. I love that she is so reasonable to understand that she’d rather have a $300 bracelet and a trip to Hawaii instead of a $5,000 bracelet.

It has come up more than once lately as to if we have had a real date. I’m not sure how to handle that question, because of course we’ve had tons of dates, but we certainly haven’t had a formal get dressed up kind of date. I’m not set on having one before we get married, but it would be kind of nice. Maybe I can arrange to take her to Wicked, although I kind of want to do that out of town. We have been talking about going to the drive in, but that wouldn’t require getting dressed up. Maybe we’ll have the opportunity next week while we are back east.

Megan made two suggestions last night which were great. I’d been thinking for a while that we needed to get better at praying together. It seems so often that we run to the end of the wick and fall asleep before we say our evening prayers, at least as formally as I’d like to. And I know that since she wakes me up in the morning, I often get out of the routine of my morning prayers. She suggested that we start praying together and also that we start reading scriptures together. I’m game for both suggestions, we just need to figure out how to actually make it work. We also have three books now to read together, so we’re thinking about each reading one alone and then passing it along. The problem I shared is that I don’t know when either of us is going to find the time to read at all.

I’m looking forward to going to the temple in the morning, but I’m not looking forward to going without any contact with Megan for that same time. I feel like I haven’t been in a while with not going last week, so I feel like I am long overdue. It sounds like I have some errands to run after the temple tomorrow. Tomorrow night we are getting fitted for our suits, getting some jewelry taken care of and hopefully spending some time with Melissa before she leaves for London.

Great Day at the Temple

I really need to get to sleep… I’m looking at less than five hours before I need to get up, but that’s about double what I got last night!

Things I’ve learned recently:

1. You can’t just go to Disneyland and ride one ride. We left an hour after closing (11) last night, so I didn’t get home till 1 this morning and was up at 4 for the temple!

2. Apparently Cynthia and I look like we’re married. It happened again today. I think I counted three separate times I was questioned in some way. Once by an officiator who when he asked if we were married and we told him no, he then asked if we had a date set yet! Then there were two if not three members of the stake that asked me about her. No wonder no one dates anyone! It’s not the “kids” that are thinking about marriage, it’s everyone else!

3. Five sessions is a lot to go through in one day with less than three hours of sleep.

4. I love turning my phone off and spending an entire day without a cell phone strapped to my side.

5. Sleep is good. I’m going there now!

Turning into a Pumpkin

I have so much to write about, but I have been so busy I haven’t had the time. I really don’t have the time tonight, but I feel that I need to touch on a few things or just outline them so that I can write about them later.

I went to Rascal Flatts last weekend. It ended up being more of a last minute thing where I just bought a bunch of tickets and hoped for the best. We had a good time – and it took some coaxing, but I got Sibonet to come. I think she had a blast. Everyone else had a good time as well. There was a total of 14 of us, so I hope they all did, but I wasn’t with them most of the time. I got seats for Sibonet and I a bit closer to the front than the lawn seats I bought for everyone else.

The LA Temple was wonderful. I loved doing an endowment there and hope we can go back more frequently. I couldn’t get over how big the ordinance rooms where. I think we figured they could seat about 450. How great would it be to see them all filled someday! I think I need to take that goal to President Smith and see what he could do with that.

We’ve been pushing hard for attendance at the offering in righteousness this week. It sounds like we’re going to have a great turnout. We have just over 80% now for the first time of endowed members with current temple recommends in the stake. Only about 50% of the current recommend holders in the branch are attending, but most other wards at running above 80% committed.

I’ve been out and staying up way too late the last week especially. With either people here or trips to the temple or Disneyland, it’s just been crazy. I had Megan and Ashley over last Monday and we were up way too late playing and talking. It was about 11:30 when i got to sleep I think and then I was up at 3:45 for the temple the next morning. Josh and I went down and did our thing and then came back up with the intent of accomplishing things and getting in a nap. Well, I accomplished a few things, but definitely not the nap. We went back down for baptisms and had a great time. There were a lot of people that showed up to join us for our session which worked out well as we only had about 14 people, but they made it get to the 24 we were supposed to have!

I officially met this sister that i’ve seen in the temple many times before. I couldn’t figure out if I knew her from somewhere before or if she was just so familiar to me from there. She said she comes often so that’s probably why I recognized her. Her name is Wendy and she’s from Carlsbad. It actually seems like I’ve been meeting a few new people lately. Through the various trips and activities I’ve been introduced to some other new people. Megan J is a friend of the Prosser’s they’ve been bringing for a few weeks, but we never really got to talking until she came over last night with Kenny to watch Twilight. She seems like a great girl and I regret not getting to know her earlier – as I’m sure I do with most people.

Batch and I had decided to go to Disneyland on Thursday night since it was his only night off. We got Kenny and Ashley to go with us and we had a blast. As we were getting out of the car Batch told me that it wasn’t going to get cold enough to need a sweatshirt so i left mine in the car. Well as we were walking around California Adventure I started to get a bit cold. While we were eating dinner I decided I was freezing, so I had to go get a sweatshirt. i figured I’d buy a new one instead of going back to the car – you can never have enough sweatshirts. Well, i found this one that I kind of liked, but then I realized that it was a bit girly. I kept looking at other ones, but didn’t find any that really jumped out to me. There was one other one that I showed to the group, but Ashley pointed out it looked a lot like one I already had. They said the other one was way too girly for me and that I shouldn’t get it. Well, at that point, I decided I was going for it and went and tried it on. Apparently the sizes are a bit different for the girls than they are for the guys as the XXL is a little tight on me. Getting it off is a bit interesting. Well, as I was checking out I guess Kenny got a little crazy. As I finished checkout out, he was standing there with a sweatshirt and said something to the effect of “oh no, you’re not going to one up me.” He proceeded to buy one with tinkerbell on it that is clearly a girls sweatshirt with a low cut V in the front and Disneyland on the rear! We had a blast walking around and Ashley was just cracking up!

We went back the next night as Jordyn wanted to go, but couldn’t go Thursday. She went to use up the second day of Maegan’s pass that she wasn’t going to be able to use. Jordyn took the opportunity to upgrade it to a season pass, so we’ll be going back more often. Well, Kenny and I brought the sweatshirts again and had a blast. Jordyn brought a pink backpack so of course Kenny had to put that on along with her glasses. We got some great pictures. Jordyn was also able to talk Sibonet into coming which was great! I’m so glad she was able to come. My feet were so tired after the first night that the second night was a bit rough and we gave up about 11:30.

Tonight I was up late talking online. It seems like there is always some reason that I can’t get to bed on-time, not that I wouldn’t do it again. It’s all been great fun!

I know I’m missing lots of things that I should be writing about, but I really need to get to sleep before I turn into a pumpkin in a few minutes here.

Thankfully Busy

Things have been so busy lately; it has really been a beautiful thing. I’ve been busy at work, at church and in other personal aspects of life it seems. I have been thankful to have enjoyed quiet evenings this week which have helped me try and adjust to this new timing with daylight savings. I’ve been going to bed early, but I haven’t been able to get up other than Tuesday morning. Actually, Monday night I kept waking up thinking it was time to go and that I was going to be late. The first time I woke up it had just turned 11! I believe there was a second time and the third time was at 3. I actually thought about getting up and getting ready, but I was worried about what the extra hour would leave me with and that I might like decide to take a nap or something.

I had an interesting time coordinating the veil again this week. They kept stealing my workers for other tasks, we were short a coordinator and my other two coordinators (who normally are my prime veil workers) were MIA on and off throughout the morning. We managed to pull it off like we always do though and it was great. I really am enjoying it and it is helping me be forced to be better at learning names and faces.

I’ve been busy at work trying to get the books in order for taxes. I think I finally got through the bulk of the stack on my desk today. I’m hoping tomorrow to get through the remaining loose items and start looking things over. Hopefully I can get the taxes going on Friday and finish them up on Saturday morning if necessary. That should leave me with an extra day, but I’m afraid that tomorrow I’m not going to accomplish much with leaving at noon, a breakfast function and another meeting or two planned in the brief time I’m there.

I can’t really think of what other exciting things have been going on so far this week. I couldn’t believe it today when I found “Here Comes Goodbye” on the iTunes store [Rascal Flatts - Here Comes Goodbye - Single - Here Comes Goodbye] after I had gone through all the work last Friday to get it myself. I should have known that they were going to get their act together and release it as a single, but oh well. At least it was a test of concept for pulling digital video & audio from the DVR if nothing else.

Well, I guess I’ll call it a night there and see if I can get some sleep tonight, and more importantly if I can actually get up tomorrow morning when I need to!

Sleep Deprived

Wow, I feel so sleep deprived I don’t know what to do other than sleep. Yesterday was an incredibly long day at the temple, but it was great nonetheless. After I worked my shift, I had lunch at Cheesecake Factory with Brother and Sister Kowallis. It was great to spend some time with them since they have been extracted from the branch! After lunch I stopped by a job site and then went back to the temple. The afternoon shift is so bored that the best thing they had for me to do was to go and do an endowment session, which I was A ok with. I barely got out of that one in time to be there for Frank & Sabrina’s endowment. That all went well, other than it was incredibly warm in the temple all day. It was a long day by the time I finally got back on the road northbound.

I stopped in Fallbrook to pick up my tow hitches that I never moved and forgot to get the last time I was there. I was able to find two of the three, but of course not the one that I was actually looking for and hoping to find. I ended up going and getting a ball to put in the blank hitch I had today which fortunately only cost me about $15. I kind of remember loaning a hitch out to someone, so now I guess I just have to figure out who in the world that might have been and why I loaned it to them!

Monday went pretty well. It was crazy in the office and I don’t remember accomplishing much of anything. I’m thinking I haven’t been at my desk since last Monday now, at least not there long enough to actually accomplish anything. The missionaries came over for dinner and Ashley and Lauren joined us. We had a good time and then Ashley stayed to help get everything cleaned up and we sat and talked past the point at which I should have been sleeping, but it was all good. Sometimes there are things better than sleeping.

I spent most of today in the shop prepping a show for tomorrow. It was quite an interesting experience. I came home to finally have a few minutes to sit at the computer to see how many emails I’ve collected as well as other things. There are quite a few that I still need to respond to. Now I’m going to get that much needed sleep!

He Sat Down in His Overalls

I’m definitely not doing so well with this internal debate I’m having. It’s a good thing I’m so sleep deprived; otherwise I’d worry that I’d be up all night discovering that on a “midnight Tuesday you can have pizza ordered in.” Oh wait, I forgot I’m living my life in a Brad Paisley song and not one from Emerson Drive. Also, I’m not eating. Well, I’ve been forcing myself to eat, but it hasn’t been going so well. Lunch o’clock came around today and I wasn’t even hungry. I think I’ve lost a few pounds since Saturday and am trying really hard to stay hydrated.

I spent most of the day today catching up on emails and bills. I actually felt like I was making progress and I saw the stack on my desk dwindle. On my lunch break (at 2 something mind you), Batch and I went to the bank (work), Radio Shack (work) and then Costco to pick up the pictures I had printed Saturday. Most of them turned out really well. I am still amazed at the black levels in the one picture of the moon; I’d have to look at the metadata, but I’m sure it’s at a really high ISO and there is no noise in the print.

I spent some time tonight framing those pictures and some I already had. I think I’m going to stop by Crate & Barrel tomorrow after the temple to grab some frames to match the one I already have the pictures from Wicked when Krystal and I went. I’m going to expand the Wicked wall there with at least a picture of Maegan and I. I may find some other expensive frames I like while I’m there too, so hopefully I can control myself. I also need to find something to house all the pictures of Melissa. That could be nearly impossible, but I need to get it done as I promised it to her over a year ago.

I’m so excited to go to the temple tomorrow. I definitely have some questions I’d like to spend some time discussing and get further clarification on some other things I’ve been pondering and feeling lately. I’m curious what I’ll be doing, but I’m sure it will be great regardless.

I hope I can get some sleep tonight so I can manage at the temple tomorrow. I almost ended up crying myself to sleep last night. I just got caught up in praying and lost it. I was finally able to get myself back into control and then I was out minutes later. In missionary correlation yesterday, AJ challenged us to choose something to fast from for 40 days and 40 sleepless nights. I think the sleepless nights was only for me. I think I’m going to fast from sleeping in as I think that is one thing that has been setting me back lately. I have not been doing so well with reading before I leave for work and I have just been getting there later and later. Tuesday’s will still have to be the exception where I don’t sit and read before leaving, but I think with my destination in mind the exception is warranted. I will resolve again to not leave the house without reading and will help to fix that problem and let me spend the appropriate amount of time by not sleeping in so much. I think it will be hard with my current sleep deprivation, but I’m going to try. And with that note, I’m going to bed, only an hour and a half late tonight!

Waitin’ on a Woman

Well, to give you an idea of how things have been going: my laptop was so dead that the led on the battery wouldn’t even flash anymore to identify itself as dead. It has been over a month since I’ve journaled/blogged and I’m honestly just kind of happy that I was able to remember the password to MacJournal! If it makes a difference, I think last time I wrote was just after the last time I went to Disneyland and then I just went there last night so I’m writing again. I’ve actually been thinking for a while that I’ve needed to blog, I just haven’t found the time or energy. I’ll be honest, the laptop has stayed in the vehicle many nights lately. It has been kind of nice to just go places and not have to take fifteen bags (ok two) with me everywhere I go including in and out of the house every-time.

If I had to sum up the last month, I’m not sure if I could. I wish I could say I’ve been waitin’ on a woman, but I think that is primarily only tonight that I’ve been really doing that. I bought a new truck, if I may call it that, getting close to a month ago. There has just been too many times that I couldn’t do something with the Camry so I decided to upgrade. I’ve been thinking about buying a truck for a few months now – probably somewhat after I discovered that I only drive four miles to work each day and not the thousands of miles I used to drive a month. I was planning this as an addition, but I’ve quickly learned that having two vehicles is a major pain. Everything is always in the other one and I’ve done the math to find that unless I’m going to start driving a lot more or the price of gas is going to skyrocket (beyond what it did last year), it doesn’t make economic sense for me to keep the Camry. it’s too bad because I really like the Camry. I’ve actually made a few calls to dealers and haven’t been seeing much good news, so I may end up selling it private party.

I’ve found myself very busy at work lately. Batch was gone one week and that just about did me in. I told him that he should never expect to have another week off – or if he does that he needs to plan on taking me with him! I’m very, very glad that things have been so busy at work. There is definitely room for improvement, but right now I’m happy for anything and everything we can get that allows us to continue working and paying the bills.

It seems that I’ve been pulling away from many of the activities of church lately. I don’t know if I’m just too busy with other things or burnt out or what, but it has really been a drag to get me anywhere other than our Sunday meetings. I didn’t even go to the Dowden’s at all last week and only went to branch prayer because I walked across the street. Never fear, the church is still true; in fact I almost feel like I’m doing better in many areas (not reading) than I have for a while. I guess I’ve just been practicing selective neglect in order to accomplish the greater tasks at hand. Speaking of neglect, I really need to come up with a lesson plan for priesthood tomorrow. In my pondering today I was actually thinking that maybe I need a break from the branch. I don’t know where I would go (Alta Murrieta Ward? another singles branch?), or for how long it would be, I just feel I need a break. Maybe I should graduate from the branch?

I’ve been meeting with the missionaries for the past few weeks which I really enjoy. It is great spending time with them and I hope they are getting something out of it. I’ve been trying to find people for them to teach: members or non-members, I just haven’t been doing so well. I just need one new person per week for them to constantly have five people to teach, yet I can’t seem to come up with it.

I can’t make it sound like I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had any free time, cause that would be a lie. It just seems that the free time is so few and far between. Sometimes that can be good, but sometimes I feel that the busyness only leads to more fits of depression if you will. In fact, I can’t think of much free time I’ve had and things have been running away from me that need to get done lately. I have had a letter from Tara on my desk for at least three weeks now and I haven’t responded to her. Some of that is due to a lack of time, but I think some of it is also due to a lack of having a clue what to tell or inspire her with. In so many ways it seems that I’ve been leading a mindless life lately.

On the other hand I have been pondering some things quite a bit. One has had me completely preoccupied all day today and for a good portion of this week.

Last week we (ward) went to the temple – on Tuesday after I had come back from the temple of course. Talk about putting those extra miles on the new car! It had been closed for two weeks so I guess I was just making up for the lack of going there the past two weeks.

This Wednesdsay we had been trying to find something to do that was different as Maegan wanted to get out of her house (problem of working from home). I was trying to find a fun new activity, but couldn’t come up with anything based on what time it was and where we were so she ended up coming over to play Phase 10 after kidnapping Larilyn. Well, on her way here her car started making a funny noise. We traced it down to her air conditioning and set her an appointment to have it looked at the next morning. Thursday, I go down to Escondido to pick her up and bring her home to get the Camry.

Friday we went to Disneyland. Batch came along and we met Marie and one of her friends there. It was such a weird night. I didn’t eat but one churro (which I shared), I didn’t ride space mountain (it broke just as Marie was going to get on), didn’t even go into California Adventure, so there was no Tower of Terror or Screaming and yet those few hours which went late into the night were some of the best I’ve ever had at Disneyland.

So it was about 2:30 when I finally got home. I awoke about 8 this morning and Maegan and I went down to Escondido to get her car back. Haven’t really done anything else today other than finally blog!

Sorry for the short thoughts in some places – I need to get to sleep. More to come soon, I promise.

Goodbye Christmas

I’m up late tonight kind of waiting for the bedspread to finish in the dryer. I guess I knew I shouldn’t have put it in, but I decided to do it anyway. Larilyn came over and took down the Christmas decorations tonight, thanks out to her for her kindness to help old Scrooge out. I know we were a few weeks behind in taking it down, but the tree was actually looking pretty good until just this week when I stopped watering it. It looks really empty now where it used to be and I feel like I need to find something to fill the void.

I went to the temple this morning for Craig’s endowment. It was fun to go with some people and meet other down there. I guess it just goes to show that we need to get together more often for trips to the temple. I actually think I had a harder time getting up this morning at 7 than I do Tuesday mornings at 4. I was so exhausted after all the walking yesterday and then being out late that it took it’s toll on me. When we got home from the temple I had to just sit and relax for a while. I spent some time over at the Dowden’s this afternoon as I had to go and fetch my phone back and we sat talking for a while.

Things went well at NAMM Thursday and Friday. Friday we got there kind of late and ended up paring in the Disneyland structure and walking. That seemed like a good plan since we got to save $12, but it was a bit of a walk. That probably wouldn’t have been as big of a deal if we didn’t continue walking and standing around once we got into the convention. And then after the show we went to Disneyland till they kicked us out at 10. That made for a long couple of days.

I decided to lug the camera around the show floor on Friday so I could snap some pictures. I was hoping to find some good products and maybe get some pictures I could use for something at work. Since we walked directly to Disneyland, I ended up having it there too which is something I’ve never done before. It actually worked alright carrying it on the rides, although it certainly meant that I was holding on to it for dear life. I did get to snap some pictures in the park though and on some of the rides. I was courteous enough to not use the flash unlike many of the other people with cameras.

Oh, we got to go see Teal (think Cheesecake) on Thursday night. That was great and has been long overdue. We were thinking about going back Friday, but she was a breaker so it wasn’t clear if we could see her or not. She excused us from coming Friday night, but I made a promise to come back soon.

I don’t think I have any major findings or revelations for today, so I’m going to call it quits and get to bed finally!

What It Takes

So it has been a while since I’ve written. To some extent, I’d say that I’ve been busy, to some I’d say I’d been too bored to write. Tonight I’m just not quite ready to go to bed, even though I really need to get some sleep. I guess there are just too many things going through my mind that I’ve been trying to figure out lately.

Let’s see if I can recount some of the recent highlights: The fireside with President Monson was great this past Sunday. I thoroughly enjoyed it and have watched it twice now and have two pages of notes. I never take notes. I hope to collect those thoughts into something more coherent soon.

My favorite song recently, and I don’t mean in the past two weeks, but the past few months, is definitely “When I Get Where I’m Going” by Brad Paisley.

The girls have been keeping me up way too late recently. Maegan and Larilyn came over on Monday night when I normally get to bed between 8 and 9 and I think were here till almost 11. Surprisingly I wasn’t all that tired at the temple the next morning. Lauren came over last night, I was able to bribe her with some brown rice pasta I found at Trader Joe’s, and I finally started watching 24 which kept me up late. It seemed like there was something all last week. I remember being somewhat excited with a Friday night off. I was going to get to bed early, but then I fell in love with the pink roses on my kitchen table and spent a few hours taking pictures of them.

Taking the pictures led to last weekends project of figuring out how to fix the picture problem. My laptop just hasn’t been cutting it with the pictures and it has taken all the fun and enjoyment out of it. So, I thought maybe it was the slow HDD and dug out some externals. That didn’t seem to make much of a change, but did help. Around 11 or 11:30 I gave up and visited apple.com to find out what time the Escondido store opened up. After an impatient morning, I was at the Apple Store and bought a new Mac Pro. It actually runs Apeture and it is really nice to have a desktop again. I want to burn some backups and then delete a bunch of the stuff that I have on my laptop. Actually, I’m starting to like the new OS (don’t remember the cat’s name) so I may wipe and reinstall.

Ryan got me playing with APRS yesterday. He told me the magic combinations I had been missing before. I now really want to get the weather station setup at the house and get it transmitting via APRS and get a GPS in the car that will talk to the 710 radio in there. I’ve also been toying with buying a truck and am considering doing it sometime this year. I think I might want to get it fully loaded with the radio rigs, scanners and other toys, so I might save the full scale gps integration for that bad boy and keep my car a little cleaner, i.e. no more toys in it. Now I just need money!

In any event, I’ve found myself depressed quite a bit lately that life just doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Clearly I can buy all sorts of expensive toys, but it doesn’t progress me anywhere. I think I’ve lost touch with some things that I need to be doing. I haven’t been reading my scriptures daily. I’ve been very anti-social which only leads to being more anit-social. Something needs to change; I’m just not sure what or how and sometimes I just want to give up. I realize that we have to go through ups and downs in life, it just seems that the valleys are larger than the plateaus.

Oh yeah, I want to plant a garden. I realize I’m not the perfect person to care for it, but I think it would be great to have fresh fruits and veggies growing outside. I could totally go for having a huge supply of strawberries this summer. It would also help me accomplish the job of setting up a compost bin or at least a kitchen pill bug type compost.

I guess Adam Gregory is singing the song of this era of my life right now:

I want to know,
I want to understand,
what it takes to be your man

What’s your favorite color,
whats your favorite song
if i sing it to you,
would you sing alone
i need to know,
I’ve got to understand
what it takes to be your man
what you want,
what you need,
baby tell me everything,
there ain’t nothing
I don’t want to know
cause all I want,
all i need,
is just you here with me
baby let me know so that I can
do what it takes to be your man.

Mom Baptized

I had a pretty good day today. I didn’t get to spend much time at home this morning before getting to work, but I did enjoy some time in bed playing Bubbles Tilt and Soduku. I had to go in to work this morning to meet a customer and then went into the bank on my way to the temple.

We had a baptistry assignment today, so Larilyn and I went down early and did an endowment session before doing baptisms. It was weird to be a full on patron; I don’t think I’ve done that since I became an ordinance worker. I felt out of place without having my jacket nearby. We had a really small session, so we ended up becoming the witness couple and I think there was only one other patron in the session that wasn’t a worker.

In any event, I was finally able to do some of my family names today, including my mom. I had been meaning to get going on this for a while (like a year), but just hadn’t gotten around to it. I think it was mostly because I didn’t know what needed to be done to prepare the names. Now that I know it is so easy to do the work in familysearch, I don’t know why it took me so long. I’m really happy to have done the work and to have presented the opportunity to each of these individuals to accept the baptism we performed today by proxy. I hope and trust that many if not most or all of the ordinances were accepted. Larilyn said she knew my mom was there; I don’t know how she feels the presence of these people, but I am grateful that the veil is so thin for her.

I was debating about getting wet and doing the ordinance myself, and I probably should have, but I was ok with presenting the names and recording. Kenny baptized Krystal for and in behalf of my mom. I don’t think anyone other than Larilyn knew it was my mom’s work that was being done.

Larilyn came over and decorated some of the house tonight for Christmas. She set up her nativity set in the living room and put garland on the banister of the stairs. We also got a table runner, although I forgot to get a square table cloth for the kitchen table. I guess I need to find a tree and get someone with a truck to bring it home for me this week. Where does one get a fresh cut tree in Murrieta?

Ready for Bed!

It’s been a long day…

I had a good day in the temple today. It was interesting as we had 120 missionaries or so from the Carlsbad mission show up this morning which gave us a great deal more patrons than we are used to having. There are also certain things with the missionaries that you have to keep in mind and plan for.

I actually ended up having lunch with two of the elders from the San Marcos Stake and their WML. I went to Chipotle after stopping at Krispy Kreme and they were just before me in line. I asked if I could join them instead of sitting by myself.

The sister I feel I’m stalking was in the 9:30 session I was supposed to be in today. I got bumped to the 10:00 session as a follower since there were so many already in the session.

I pretty much only came into the office today to have some meetings.

Shelly and Craig made some great tri-tip for dinner tonight and then I went over to the Dowden’s to take Andrea her chocolate cake doughnuts. She didn’t even eat one though and went for an original! I left her a bunch, so I’m sure she will be enjoying them soon. I took candy to the RS enrichment tonight for Sister Dowden and then ended up staying while they completed their activity as there was no one else in the building.

I had to spend some time troubleshooting my dad’s internet problems tonight and after 35 minutes I finally got someone at AT&T to tell me that they are having an outage. It would have been great if I could have found that information before we spent all this time troubleshooting things inside the house.

Better Day

I had a pretty good day today. I was actually looking forward to going to work today, which is extra strange since I didn’t get much of a weekend. Maybe it was just cause I had been out of the office for a few days and knew I had a lot of things to get done. I was busy most of the day just getting odd things done and actually checked a few things off my to do list which is always good. I even finished signing all the Christmas cards so they can go out tomorrow.

I had a nice quiet evening at home. After catching up on my online reading for a while I decided to try and find something nice to write back to Sister Caldwell. I think I’ve had her letter for well over a week now, so it was definitely overdue. I then came upstairs to get ready for bed at 8 and it’s 9:15 and I’m not yet asleep.

I’m really looking forward to the temple tomorrow. I’m kind of bummed that I have to rush out of there and get to work though. And I really have to make up to Andrea and get Krispy Kreme Doughnuts for her.

No Doughnuts

I had a good time at the temple today. I officiated the 7:30 session and then attended the 9:30, which was a bit different for me. Sister Kowallis was in the 9:30. People have been saying that I’ve been doing a good job, but all I can think of is all the things that I should be doing better. They probably realize that I’m learning and know what I need to be working on.

I ate way too much at Fuddruckers for lunch today. I was just going to have a burger, and then went for the bacon cheddar cheeseburger and after the great fries this weekend, ordered some of those. Then I decided to get a chocolate shake. I didn’t need nearly that much food. Nor did I need the cookie that they gave me on the way out after I ordered brownies for Batch. The cookie was pretty good though, something new for the holidays, a peppermint cookie. It was like a chocolate chip cookie, but with peppermint bits instead of chocolate chips.

I went to work for a meeting this afternoon and was able to get through most of the email from the day. I’m going to have to actually get down to work tomorrow.

I heard a new song on the radio on my way home and went on iTunes to check it out. Then I started looking at Christmas music, I’m not sure why or how, but I guess I was just wasting time waiting for Alison. I’ve decided that I’d be ok with Christmas music if it was all sung by Josh Groban. I love his voice so much I’ve practically been listening to his Noel CD since I bought it four hours ago.

Alison and I went to Pat & Oscar’s tonight. We haven’t been there in forever and ended up getting a comped meal from the manager. I later got in trouble for not taking doughnuts to the Dowden’s today. I didn’t know that I was supposed to. No one had asked that I was aware of and I didn’t really feel like going to KK for the fun of it.
